AIPG’s New EEC Facility

Max-M12-Amphenol

Amphenol Corporation, a major producer of fiber optic and electronic connectors, cables, and interconnect systems, has recently improved their Max M12 product offering in order to include board level connectors which can mate onto a printed circuit board with either right angle solder pins or straight solder pins. These latest connectors will be ideal for use in harsh environments and high speed data transmission devices.

The Max M21 product line is capable of easily transmitting high speed data in demanding environments where there might be moisture, high vibration, debris, dirt, and salt. Such applications will include communication systems and cameras on mining, agricultural, and construction equipment. This improved Max M12 printed circuit board header connects with an in-line which is capable of withstanding contact retentions forces up to 110 N as well as connector to cable retention forces up to 444 N. The in-line mate is offered in straight versions and 90 degree right angle versions; they are housed in a plastic shell or an HDM 12 EX impact resistant metal. This HDM 12 EX impact resistant metal version is necessary for shielding. SanDisk New USB 3.1 Flash Drives

Boyd Chan, wrote an article June 3rd 2016 that was published on Neowin the talks about how SanDisk released a new USB 3.1 flash drive with both Type-A and Type-C connectors. This can be seen in the HP Spectre laptop crams three ports used to power and recharge the devices.

Even though this is very new to the industry, the non-reversible USB Type-A port is still being widely used throughout the industry. However, this leads to a problem. Here’s what Chan says.

“This has led to situations where devices end up being physically incompatible with each other despite being compatible with each other at the USB protocol level."

This problem is solved with the Type-A and Type-C connector that SanDisk released. This is called the Ultra Dual Drive range. In order to use this device, one would have to pop out the desired connector and attach the corresponding side within the housing. Chan has it more descriptive way to say it.

“To pop out the desired connector, you simply have to slide the notch to the corresponding side and slide it back to the middle to retract it safely within the housing.”

These new USB’s will have a reading speed of up to 150MB/s. The lower models will still pump up to 130MB/s.

These Ultra Dual Drives will be released to the market at difference price points. These will be at $19.99 for the 16GB, $29.99 for the 32GB, $39.99 for the 64GB, $69.99 for the 128GB. These prices were provided by Western Digital, however there could possibly be cheaper pricing at Amazon.

Displayport USB Type-C

The DisplayPort Connector was developed by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) and is a digital display interface. This interface is mainly used in order to connect a video source to a display device, such as a computer screen or monitor. The DisplayPort Connector may also be used to carry USB, audio, as well as other forms of data.

Although most of us do not spend much time to consider the importance of DisplayPort standards, they are pretty significant in terms of how our computers are connected to our monitors. Fischer-MiniMax-06

On May 2nd 2016, Fischer Connectors released a new article on the Fisher Minimax Series. This series displays how small the connectors are. To give you an idea or a picture of how small these are, the Fischer connectors are smaller than a pin.

The connect has up to 12 power and has a signal contact in a footprint of just 10 mm. With these types of specifications, the connector will have a density factor of 0.83 which is very unique in its own way. This is considered unique because more connections are in the standard form of 0.5 mm contacts. This is not the only unique part of the MiniMax06. This connector has an interesting configuration of 2 high power and 2 signal 1.3 mm contacts that can be used in applications that require 10 Amps as the very minimum. This is actually double the standard of 5 Amps of the MiniMax line they already have.

The MiniMax06 is very universal in a sense that it can be used in a wide variety of products such as instrumentation, testing equipment, defense and security, and civil or military unmanned aerial vehicles.

The MiniMax06 has 5000 mating cycles, can transfer data at 10Gb/s, IP68 mated and unmated, and a locking system that includes functions such as pushing and pulling, screw, and quick release. It also can be available pre-cabled.

OCuLink-connectors

The new PCI Express 4.0 spec running at 16 Gbps per lane is being supported by the 2nd generation Optical Copper (Cu) Link interconnect system for inside and outside the box. Molex’s Nano Pitch connector and cable assembly system was selected by the PCI-SIG committee and is the option for the newly developing SAS 4.0 spec 24 Gbps per lane performance storage links. Internal cable assemblies, PCB receptacle connectors, shielded external cable assemblies and port receptacle connectors are nearing the final design and business case inputs by suppliers of tooling development. Some suppliers are expected to design their connector product to be able to support the next generation of PCI Express 5.0 which is running at 32 Gbps per lane for future proofing and reduction of development costs within the next few years.

The OCuLink-1 interconnect system has been a mainstay on the market for a few years now and have been used in support of the PCI Express 3.0. The OCuLink-2 external plug connector and port receptacle connector on the other hand works as a two-piece metal to metal contact system with the receptacle having a lower height and shorter depth inside the box on the PCB. This requires the OCuLink-2 plug end weight and thermal cooling path to be outside the box and then becomes a design concern for the 4 and 8 lane active cable assemblies that are needed for the datacenter reaches.

The OCuLink-2 external cabling usage in the SAS storage systems is still somewhat unclear as the new HDminiSAS 4- and 8-lane interconnect system has evolved from the dominant and traditional miniSAS connector system. MicroQSFP is also competing for the external SAS cabling applications and the OCuLink-2 will likely be used within the rack and short rack rows in new smaller datacenters based on existing Express Fabric architecture. Lately there has been a growing trend within the industry towards the converged I/O interface systems which typically only uses one connector type for all their networked devices which includes servers, storage, memory and communication subsystems. However there exists hope and a push to use the OCuLink-2 in the new USB 3.1 and nascent 3.2 docks because the USB 3.1 Type C connectors is limited to only 2 or 3 lanes.
