The Latest DisplayPort Standard
The DisplayPort Connector was developed by the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) and is a digital display interface. This interface is mainly used in order to connect a video source to a display device, such as a computer screen or monitor. The DisplayPort Connector may also be used to carry USB, audio, as well as other forms of data.
Although most of us do not spend much time to consider the importance of DisplayPort standards, they are pretty significant in terms of how our computers are connected to our monitors. After almost two years since the last version, the Video Electronics Standards Association has recently published their most recent version of the transfer protocol. In 2014, the 1.3 version had its main focus on 4K. Today, the 1.4 version is more intended to provide lossless compression while also taking advantage of relatively innovative connection methods such as USB Type-C.
“So, here in 2016 what's new? How does displaying HDR and 8K video via the new USB format grab you? Specifically, 8Kp60Hz HDR with support for deep color and 4Kp120Hz with HDR and deep color”
Stated Timothy Seppala from Engadget.
“In English, that means DisplayPort will be able to handle an awful lot of information at once - something most folks likely won't even be able to take advantage of for quite a while. Unless you have one of Acer's fancy new monitors, that is.”
Looking further, the Video Electronics Standards Association has stated that the most recent version of their Display Stream Compression 1.2 is practically lossless now. It also has the capabilities to offer bandwidth for 32 audio channels as well as ultra-high sampling rates.
“While this likely won't have too much of an impact on your living room where HDMI reigns supreme,”
Seppala added,
“VESA board member Alan Kobayashi says it should play a "vital" role in the growth of all those fancy automotive infotainment systems.”
