Marathon Norco Aerospace originated from Marathon Battery Company, incorporated in 1923. Their main business was producing, as their company name entails, was producing carbon-zinc dry batteries and cells. They gained a foothold in the industry due to their efforts in supplying military batteries during World War II and the Korean War, which earned them the Army and Navy “E” award for excellence, a very coveted honor. Marathon Norco began developing a rechargeable sintered plate nickel-cadmium battery in 1948 and subsequently became the first US company to manufacture these batteries in 1949. 3 years later, they began producing these nickel-cadmium batteries for the US Army Nike Missile program and the Atomic Energy Commission, which were used initially in missiles and later for aircraft applications. Their batteries were approved by the US Air Force Strategic Air Command for use in the B-47 bomber fleet not long after that.

Throughout the 1960s, Marathon Norco continued research and development into battery technology, unveiling several new product lines. In more recent decades, they acquired several notable companies that have helped them achieve their current size. In 1981, Marathon acquired Flite-Tronics, an inverter manufacturer. They also acquired Christie Electric Corp in 2000, a manufacturer of equipment that support the DC power market. This provided them with a very strong product line that they continue to supply today.
